Coming Soon: “Shine A Light”

I do not think this one needs much explaining at all.
Martin Scorsese. The Rolling Stones. Need I say more? Probably not, but I will anyway. It is a brand new documentary that was shot back in October and November over two nights last year at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The film attempts to immortalize the Stone’s performances on those nights, tied together with back stage footage and historical clips. Scorsese assembled a crew of seven of the world’s best cinematographers, Ellen Kuras, Mitchell Amundsen, Stuart Dryburgh, Robert Elswit, Andrew Lesnie, Emmanuel Lubezki, Robert Richardson in “Shine A Light,” I have no doubt that the spirit of the Stones will be captured better than ever before. The documentary came about when Mick Jagger thought it would be great to make a film that would capture the greatness of the Stone’s biggest how ever, and by combining their talents with Scorsese’s, something unique and great may very well result. I must say that I believe him. Paramount Vantage is releasing the film in the US on April 4th (instead of the original date of 21 September 2007) and in SA on the 18th of April. I get to see it on the 4th of April, at a free screening, so I am glad about that. This is the #1 documentary/concert film of 2008 in my opinion, as of today anyway, I have no clue as to which other documentaries will be good in 2008, but I know this one will.

Isn’t this being released in SA on the 4th of April?
Also worth checking out, if you haven’t already, is Scorsese’s Bob Dylan doc, No Direction Home.

Right you are, change has been made. 4th April it is. I really need to get the latest CPR spreadsheet, the one I have is from the beginning of Feb ~ oh how things can change in a month. So many release dates are different.
Yes, I loved No Direction Home. That was so great.
Have you seen I’m Not There yet? I have still only seen Cate Blanchett’s performance on a screener and not the whole movie. Sucks!

I have indeed, and I think it’s very good. Some have dismissed it as an overly complicated semiotic gewgaw that’s more interesting to think about in retrospect than to actually watch, with the only real standout being the Blanchett segments. I would agree that Blanchett is the standout of the film, but I found much else to admire in the rest of it, and I’m no Bob Dylan fundi.
If you’re interested in director Todd Haynes, you must check out Safe, which, in my view, is his best film. Remarkable stuff.

I can see it on April 7, that is the earliest. I love Bob D. and I know I will love the film, and I really want to see Heath….is that sick? Whatever, I just have to see it.
I will check out Safe, I have only seen Far From Heaven, which I enjoyed a bit.
BTW, I just got an email from the PR Manager of Nu Metro saying Shine A Light moves from 4 April to 18 April.

I’ve got a press screening of this next week but I don’t think I can make it. Either way it’s opening wide next Friday so it will be readily available. I hope it’s good!

I mean, if it opens next week Friday for you missing your press screening isn’t that much of a biggie, if it only opens for me on April 18, I have no choice but to attend some kind of screening. I hope it is good too :)

Yeah, press screenings are generally only 2 or 3 days before the film opens, so unless I want to publish the review on opening day or it is a film that won’t be playing wide it often isn’t worth driving the 2 hours it takes to get to the screening. So I tend to be choosy about which screenings I attend.
I’ll definitely be hitting the big ones though, like “Indiana Jones” and films of that sort.

I am choosy to, but only when I get to go to the screenings at all. You see, school gets in the way every time. So I can only go in the holidays. Sucks, but what can I do?
I will try for the big ones too.

Okay, I have a question for you. I live in a what I always thought was considered a Major City … Portland, Oregon, and “Shine A Light” isn’t playing anywhere here on 4/4. It is playing in a smaller town several miles away, Tigard. When will it be coming to Portland, Oregon? Why such a small release when it’s supposed to be a Wide release???

Hey Gretchen :)
The thing is, it was not really a *wide* release, rather a larger than limited release. It has not opened in South Africa {where I live} at all and I had to see it at a press screening. I am not really sure of anything about Portland {other than watching Paranoid Park} so I am afraid I am no help at all, which sucks. I am sorry. If/when you see it, I would love to hear your thoughts!
