Weekend Attractions (18 – 20 April ‘08)
Films opening in South Africa this weekend:
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese and one of the world’s greatest rock & roll bands, The Rolling Stones, unite to bring audiences the concert film event, Shine a Light – a look at The Rolling Stones, the band that defined the very idea of what a rock & roll band is, live through the eyes of Scorsese. It really is great, if you are a fan like me or more of a fan too I guess.
Director: Martion Scorsese
Performers: The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Jack White and Christina Aguilera.
Age Restriction: 13 M
Running Time: 122 minutes
The Other Boleyn Girl
Two sisters, Anne (Natalie Portman) and Mary (Scarlett Johansson) Boleyn, are driving by their ambitious father and uncle to advance the family’s power and status by courting the affections of the King of England (Erica Bana). Leaving behind the simplicity of country life, the girls are thrust into the dangerous and thrilling world of court life, and what began as a bid to help their family develops into a rivalry between Anne and Mary for the love of the king. Based on Phillipa Gregory’s best selling novel. I have heard it is awful, still want to see it though. I can take melodrama, if the ladies are as lovely as Portman and Johansson.
Director: Justin Chadwick
Cast: Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Erica Bana an Kristin Scott Thomas.
Age Restriction: 13 SV
Running Time: 115 minutes
Mad Money
Inspired by true events, Mad Money follows three very different women, who while working for the Federal Reserve Bank, form an alliance to steal money destined for destruction. Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes lead an award-winning ensemble cast in Oscar-winner (”Thelma & Louise”) Callie Khouri’s comedy about what happens when crime does pay very well ….for years. Go team!
Director: Callie Khouri
Cast: Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, Katie Holmes, Ted Danson
Age Restriction: PG L
Running Time: 104 minutes
How She Move
Following her sister’s death from drug addiction, a high school student is forced to leave her private school to return to her old, crime-filled neighbourhood where she re-kindles an unlikely passion for the competitive world of step dancing. It will be interesting to see if this one is just as clichéd as other recent dance films.
Director: Ian Iqbal Rashid
Cast: Tracey Armstrong, Clé Bennett, Nina Dobrey, Romina D’Ugo, Kevin Duhaney, Shawn Fernandez, Brennan Gademans, and Jason Harrow
Age Restriction: 10 M
Running Time: 90 minutes
Street Kings (aka The Night Watchmen)
Keanu Reeves stars as Tom Ludlow, a veteran LAPD cop who finds solace in the bottle after the death of his wife. When evidence implicates him in the execution of a fellow officer, he is forced to go up against the cop culture he’s been a part of his entire career, ultimately leading him to uncover an extortion conspiracy that runs deep with the department.
Director: David Ayer

How She Move. “It will be interesting to see if this one is just as clichéd as other recent dance films.” I actually saw this and it wasn’t as bad as it sounds. It’s the same old story, but the cast and the dancing were pretty good. I’m not saying you should run out and see it, but if you do you probably won’t hate it.

“Rogue Assassin” huh? That one was titled WAR when it was released over here, and it’s TERRIBLE. By the way, Jackie Chan’s not in it.
I wouldn’t call “The Other Boleyn Girl” terrible, but it is painfully average. The costumes are pretty though.

Yeah, I’ve said it before, The Other Boleyn Girl is really hit or miss. I thought it hit, but it was still a major miss, somewhat.
…that didn’t make sense, did it?
And yes, the costumes alone are worth seeing it, IMO. Sandy Powell, how I love you!

Yeah, I really want to see How She Move though, I have heard it is not like most of the others, which I hate with a passion {Step Up, Rize….}, but I will make the effort to see it.
lol Matt, sometimes I am so stupid, I don’t even double check the info I get sent on the releases. *My bad* I am still giving it a miss anyway, lol. Why do films in the US always have different names when they are released in SA, so weird! Thanks for the correction ;)
I will see Boleyn girl no matter what, I have already expressed my doubts about it too, but like you {J.D. and Matt} say, it sure looks pretty, and so do the stars.
Sucks that I get all the crappy-ish 2008 releases before the good ones.
