Iron Man

Films opening in South Africa this {long} weekend….

Films all open tomorrow, which is Thursday….

Iron Man

The big-screen adaptation of Marvel’s legendary superhero, Iron Man, is a must see – I honestly think it is going to rock. Oscar® nominee Robert Downey Jr. stars as Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, in the story of a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped by terrorists and forced to build a devastating weapon.

Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armour and escapes captivity. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armour and vows to protect the world as Iron Man. And we get it a day, less than a day for those going to midnight screenings, than the US. Just thought I’d throw that out there ;)

Director: Jon Favreau
Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard & Samuel L. Jackson.
Running Time: 126 minutes.
Age Restriction: 13 V

My Blueberry Nights

Acclaimed music star Norah Jones plays a sensual, alluring young woman who sets out on an unforgettable journey of discovery in pursuit of true love.

In heartbreakingly beautiful locations and classic Route 66 atmospheric diners, Wong Kar Wai (In the Mood for Love) tells the story of a captivating heroine who encounters a series of enigmatic characters that help her on her quests. The first English language film from this director features an all-star cast. I have waited nearly a year to see it, and I refuse to wait any longer. I know I will love it.

Director: Wong Kar Wai
Cast: Norah Jones, Jude Law, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman.
Running Time: 95 minutes.
Age Restriction: 13 L

The Walker

Set in the opulent world of Washington DC’s political elite, a brutal murder threatens to shatter a community where appearances are everything.

Society escort Carter Page unwittingly becomes implicated in the killing. As the net tightens around him, he must race against time to clear his name and shield a friend from scandal.

It did not get such a great reception last year, but I am so in for it, I think it sounds interesting, and has a good cast indeed.

Director: Paul Schrader
Cast: Woody Harrelson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lauren Bacall, Lily Tomlin and Willem Defoe
Running Time: 106 minutes.
Age Restriction: 13 V

Semi-Pro

In the early 1970s, there are two basketball leagues in America – while the NBA rules the sport, the ABA is defined by its outlaw flair and sensational showmanship. In the comedy Semi-Pro, Will Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, the one-hit singing sensation behind Love Me Sexy, who relishes his role as owner, coach and power forward for the fictional Flint, Michigan Tropics of the ABA.

When the NBA announces a plan to merge with the ABA and only take with them the four teams with the best records, disbanding the rest of the ABA squads forever, Moon decides to rally his motley team for an unlikely eleventh-hour pursuit of acceptance and glory. Probably won’t suck, but still won’t be good enough to care for….it is totally up to you though…*cough-skip it-cough*

Director: Kent Alterman.
Cast: Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, André Benjamin, Will Arnett, Rob Corddry, DeRay Davis, Maura Tierney and Jackie Earle Haley
Running Time: 93 minutes.
Age Restriction: 16 L

Made of Honour

Made of Honour chronicles the relationship between Tom and Claire, who have been friends for over 10 years. He’s a serial dater, while she wants marriage but hasn’t found Mr. Right.

Just as Tom starts to realise that he may be relationship material, Claire gets engaged. When she asks Tom to be her ‘maid’ of honour, he reluctantly agrees – only so he can attempt to stop the wedding and win her back before it is too late. I am SO there.

Director: Paul Weiland
Cast: Patrick Dempsey, Michelle Monaghan and Sydney Pollack.
Running Time: 100 minutes.
Age Restriction: 13 MLS

Shutter

For photographer Ben and his new wife, Jane, his new assignment – a lucrative fashion shoot in Tokyo – was supposed to be a kind of working honeymoon. With this exotic professional opportunity and the limitless possibilities of a new marriage, Ben and Jane arrive in Japan. But as they make their way on a mountain road leading to Mt. Fuji, their new life together comes to a crashing halt. Their car smashes into a woman standing in the middle of the road, who has materialised out of nowhere. Upon regaining consciousness after the accident, Ben and Jane cannot find any trace of the girl that Jane believes she hit with the car.
The newly-married couple discovers disturbing, ghostly images in photographs they develop after the accident. Fearing the manifestations may be connected, they investigate and learn that some mysteries are better left unsolved.

Director: Masayuki Ochiai
Cast: Is it wrong that I just don’t care?
Running Time: 85 minutes.
Age Restriction: 16 V

Mr. White – Mr. Black

Trying to fulfil his father’s last wish, Gopi (Sunil Shetty), a simpleton, arrives in Goa from Hoshiyarpur to hand over an incredibly tiny piece of land to his childhood friend Kishen (Arshad Warsi). Kishen is now a duplicitous conman, swindling people with a little help from his accomplice, Babu (Atul Kale), to earn enough money to pay for his sibling’s London education, and he avoids Gopi like Gopi’s bad news – he’s not going to give up his flourishing business and travel to Hoshiyarpur just to take possession of a measly piece of land. Tanya, the daughter of KG Resorts’ owner, gives Gopi a helping hand.

If you are into Bollywood, go ahead….

  3. J.D. said,

    ENVY

    :)

  4. “Iron Man” does indeed rock. The final battle is a bit weak, but overall the movie is a blast. Better than “My Blueberry Nights” anyway, which is really sad.

I should not be able to say that.

And yes, “Semi-Pro” is definitely skippable. If you’ve seen “Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights,” or “Blades of Glory,” then you’ve already seen it.

  5. Nick Plowman said,

Yeah, Mike M, but no doubt you won’t see any of them….unless you see like one or something, but you never ask to go with me, so….what are you waiting for???

lol J.D. Did you watch Diving Bell????

I am almost leaving the house, will see Iron Man, Blueberry Nights and the Walker…..we’ll see.

I sure hope I like Blueberry Nights as well…I will be really sad if it sucks.

  6. J.D. said,
