A Marvel of a Franchise?
Jumping the gun a bit I say, hot off the initial success of “Iron Man,” Marvel have announced their planned schedule consisting of four films, two in 2010 and two in 2011. If you are reading this, I assume you have seen “Iron Man.”

2010:
April 30: Iron Man 2
June 4 : Thor (to be directed by Matthew Vaughn)2011:
May 6: The First Avenger: Captain America
July ? : The Avengers
I said it was to be a “marvel of a franchise” in my Iron Man review, but I think, and this is just my personal opinion - a bit too much.

The news is actually in line with Marvel’s business Plan, which was announced when they formed Marvel Entertainment way back before Iron Man and the new Hulk film were officially green lit. Marvel promised that they would deliver 2 features a year starting in 2008.
The writers strike and the inevitable forthcoming actors strike has put them behind schedule so nothing will happen in 2009, when they were planning on releasing Thor and Ant-Man.
There is definitely enough demand for the supply but I think their mistake is that they are launching the Avengers too early. Especially since Captain America and The Avengers will only be a month apart. In the past launching sequels in rapid succession has seen a big dip from two to three (Matrix, Pirates and Back to the future), with the exception of the Lord of the Rings franchise.
However, the smallest gap there was 6 months (Matrix), 1 month is unprecedented and could go either way but would seem to have more potential for disaster.

I agree about them releasing “The Avengers” to early - I mean a month and a bit after “Captain America.” Maybe it will work to is benefit, but as you say, perhaps to its detriment.
My head hurts – and it is all Marvel’s fault.
