Hotties and the Notties. Link Love (10/7/08)

Posted in Link Love tagged at 12:30 am by Nick Plowman

  • Turns out that the recently reviewed exhausting gem “Silent Light,” which I saw on DVD by the way, is set to open theatrically in the US in winter. Anthony Kaufman says so anyway. Karina Longworth rejoices.
  • People are bored with “Inglorious Bastards” already, and it has not even begun filming. I’m with them. And unless some major breakthrough occurs, I won’t mention IB for a while. I couldn’t care less
  • Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Sherlock Holmes in a Guy Ritchie’s take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s well-known story. Damn, if Downey’s in it, I guess I will have to care.
  • TIFF update, Richie’s RocknRolla has been confirmed as a part of the fests line-up. Can’t wait for them to announce the entire line-up and get it over with.
  • Vanity Fair’s “Teen Hollywood” issue is always a must-see (for me anyway). You can see the gorgeous spreads of some of my favourite young starlets here. There’s Kristen Stewart, other hotties, and Jonah Hill.
  • Kung Fu Panda: The real making of. Who knew such harmless film had such a tough upbringing.
  • Trailering: Max Payne, with Marky Mark and Mila Kunis. Joy.

Nick, Downey Jr. playing Holmes … that could be great. The best Holmes was the very strange, neurotic version played for the BBC by Jeremy Brett. If Downey Jr. really goes into some dark places, as he is capable of, instead of some of his patented quirky shtick, he could rival Brett.

    You bet, Nick.

Rick – Yeah, it really could be great. I’ve never seen the BBC version, but I have seen Downey give consistently good performances over and over again, but I get what you are saying too; if he can go to those dark places. Wow. Yeah, that’s going to be amazing to see.

    Ally – He better not disappoint me/us…{like he could, really}

Silent Light certainly has its problems, but I wouldn’t say one of them is tedium — it fairly zipped by for me. Unlike the doofuses at AFDA — “we worship narrative here, just like Australia and America!” — I can quite happily enjoy a film on a formal level alone, just so long as said level is sufficiently dazzling. And in Silent Light it is sufficiently dazzling, to say the least.

Also, this anti-Tarantino posturing, that hipsters the world over seem to love so much, is what’s really boring.

I loved “Silent Light” but it didn’t hold my attention all the time. Maybe it does for other people, but my patient only goes so far. I thought it was pretty dazzling myself.

Also, I am not against Tarantino, I’m a huge fan, its just that all the unwarranted buzz surrounding his latest screenplay is getting on my nerves. So I’m not against him, rather those that are fixated with his new movie, which has not even begun filming. When it does begin filming, I’ll care.

I would say that any new Tarantino project is worth celebrating — particularly if you’re a huge fan of the man’s work — so unless purple-prosed websites dedicated to the screenplay start popping up, I don’t really think it’s unwarranted. Wells has admittedly made a bit of a meal of it, but that was clearly a bid to get his mitts on a copy. Otherwise, I haven’t seen any abnormally superfluous posts/articles about it.

  8. Nick Plowman said,

Coolio. Yeah, Wells definitely has made an issue of it {it’s so him} as well as quite a few others who are mainly focusing on the “I have the screenplay, and you don’t, so hahahaha” thing, which is annoying. But I get what you are saying, and I really am thrilled by the prospect of a new Tarantino flick, I just don’t want to be a part of the examination of the screenplay thing. Because that is really only one component of the entire product, and I would like to keep my knowledge of what the film is about to a minimum.

Fair enough. When boastfully commenting on this sort of thing, some folks do have a tendency to drop spoilers into their posts as casually as they do punctuation marks. I can certainly sympathise with your irritation about that. The best thing to do, of course, would be to not read any of it.

  10. Nick Plowman said,

Yip, I’m not going to read anything. While I do have the “Inglorious Bastards” screenplay in my possession, I am only using it to lure other people into giving me stuff I want. I won’t read it though, don’t really want to. Not like I have the time even if I wanted to.

By the way, did you rent Silent Light from Video Spot? I may pop by there this weekend and I’m hoping they’ve imported some new titles. (The last time I was there, they didn’t have Silent Light.)

  12. Nick Plowman said,

Yes I did, and I only rented it because “Tell No One” was out. Now I’ve seen them both, and I’m glad. I wouldn’t have known about “Silent Light” if it weren’t for you, so thanks.

If they have anything new, please tell me coz whenever I go there, my friends rush me, and I never have time to see for myself.

  13. Paul said,

    Great pleasure, Nick.

If I go, I’ll let you know.

  14. Nick Plowman said,

Thanks….I’m on my way to see “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” right now, and I am dreading it. Wish me luck, lol.

That Vanity Fair spread is gorgeous.

  16. Nick Plowman said,

Isn’t it? But then again, when aren’t Vanity Fair spreads amazing?
