Marshall gets his Nine, but at what cost?

The latest name attached to Rob Marshall’s musical is none other than the endlessly talented, acting superstar Fergie, you know, of megahits like “Poseidon” and “Planet Terror.” So by adding her to a cast that so far includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cottilard, Penelope Cruz, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and Judi Dench, not only does she stick out like a sore thumb but she also bumps up the films main cast from eight extraordinarily talented individuals to those eight plus one; making nine. That novelty is pretty much where my interest begins and ends in terms of “Nine,” for now anyway. [ComingSoon]

Fergie is meant to be playing the lustful Saraghina who introduces Daniel Day-Lewis’ characters Guido to a world of unexplored sensuality and sexuality. Personally, I just do not see her as all that sensual, especially when you have Cruz, Cottilard and the gang, which are far more sensual than Fergie, in the picture. I can, however, imagine Fergie Ferg playing the role of a big lipped, meth-smoking struggling musician/actress, but that’s still out of her league I fear. “Nine” will being shooting [up] in October in the United Kingdom.

“What on Earth is Marshall thinking?” If he is thinking at all. I’m going to [try to] avoid judgement until further notice.

This post makes me sad. Nick… :(

It’s all very tongue in cheek, so don’t worry too much.

  3. I don’t mind her, Nicky. I own THE DUTCHESS.

(Had to pick it up. FERGIELICIOUS kind of hit home, if you know what I mean. Normally I hate that kind of music…)

I think ROB knows EXACTLY what he’s doing. CHICAGO was superbly cast. We didn’t see FERGIE’S auditions or tests, after all.

    She might just surprise you.

To quote Television Without Pity’s report on her casting:

“This? This is just. No. I object, universe. I object.”

Miranda, a friend of mine gave me that CD as well, its not bad, and I don’t really dislike Fergie but I just doubt she can pull off such a roll. I’m hoping she proves me horribly wrong though.

    k, LOL. Just, LOL.

Garg. I am not a Fergie fan, believe it or not. Nothing personal against her, but I always liked the Black Eyed Peas before she came on the scene.

I say throw Duffy in there instead of Fergie…

  7. After seeing MAMMA MIA I’m looking forward to seeing this even more. We need another great musical, and MAMMA MIA was not it.

  8. Nick Plowman said,

Duffy! Yeah, she’s amazing. Pick her instead Marshall…..

Matt – I am SO dying to see “Mamma Mia!,” I’m really jealous, but yeah we do need another great musical. I love musicals, I can only hope Fergie does a good job.

  9. And it’s a musical based on 8 1/2! With Daniel Day-Lewis! And Marion Cotillard! And Nicole Kidman! And Judi Dench! And *faints*

I’m gonna join you in that, *swoon….faint…thud*

Nick – I’m late to the party, but I just found this post.
I love the original stage version of “Nine,” but with every new casting announcment, I get less and less enthusiastic about the film. Given that it’s a muscial version of Fellini’s “8 1/2,” I’m not sure it’s a good idea to make it into a movie with ANY one – “8 1/2″ is one movie that does not need to be remade, ever, musical or not. Rob Marshall is either very courageous or completely insane.

I couldn’t agree with you more, “8 1/2″ is brilliant and need not be touched, but Hollywood cannot help themselves.

I’m curious to see how it turns out, but I mostly want to see how much it will suck rather than waning to experience the film, if that makes sense.
