Sony Classics picks up “Synecdoche, New York”
Just the other day news came along that Sony Pictures Classics was eyeing the highly anticipated Charlie Kaufman flick “Synecdoche, New York,” and now it has been confirmed that they have picked it up. Apparently, the company had been interested in the film for over two years, ever since Kaufman described it to the powers that be over dinner. Quite an interesting film to describe over dinner if you ask me, but it has resulted in the pic finally getting a slightly solid release date: October 2008, i.e. Oscar season. SA should get it sometime in 2009, but I bet it’s more than worth the wait. Anne Thompson has the full press release up. I read the screenplay over my winter break, in two days flat, and it confused the crap out of me, which is the same with any other Kaufman penned screenplay. I just got to hand it to the ingenious weirdo, he has skill, and his film will hopefully be one of the weirdest, most intriguing, talked about films of the year. I cannot wait. [Variety via LiC]

I think Kaufman tries too hard to be weird, and that irks me.

I think it comes naturally…and I love that about him and his work.
