Films opening in South Africa this weekend:
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
Can you get a life and discover love, all in one day? Two women are about to find out. In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself, once again, unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realises that she must, for the first time in two decades, seize the day. This, she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level – as ‘Social Secretary.’ Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams). I missed every single press screening of this despite my initial enthusiasm about wanting to see it. I’m sure its sweet and all, so I will check it out.
X Files: I Want to Believe
“The X-Files: I Want to Believe” stumbles as it tries to balance fear, doubt, faith and belief while struggling even more to sustain a suspenseful momentum with its lethargic pacing and criss-crossing through various unrelated subplots at the most inappropriate of times. For anyone who believed the film could recapture something other than the palpable chemistry between [Fox] Mulder and [Dana] Scully and the constantly eerie atmosphere present in the TV show, get ready to have your belief system shaken to its core. It’s no wonder the details surrounding the film were kept under such tight wraps.” (read the rest of my review)
You Don’t Mess With the Zohan
a comedy from screenwriters Adam Sandler, Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, as seen on Late Night with Conan O’Brien), and Judd Apatow (Knocked Up), Sandler stars as Zohan, an Israeli commando who fakes his own death in order to pursue his dream: becoming a hairstylist in New York…
Sucktastic indeed…

I saw THE X FILES last night at 6:30 P.M. at our nearby multiplex, with four of my five kids, and I must admit I was completely underwhelmed by it–it wasn’t cohesive, was only intermittantly involving, and used and abused every conventional narrative device in the book–with an overbearing and manipulative score to boot. The young kids were completely lost. (understandably)
As far as MISS PETIGREW, that was only passable, but with limited releases I could understand someone giving it a look-see.
There are other new releases here in the states, but the last thing I want to do is be obnoxious and brag about these titles titles on this site, where, lamentably, a number of films don’t come out until down the road a bit.

Miss Pettigrew is nice. Plus, Amy Adams writhes naked except for a fur coat on a couch while giggling.
So, yes.

Pettigrew is worth seeing, especially if you like the cast. I’ve warmed up to X-Files somewhat thanks to some thoughtful reviews I’ve read. Still, it’s really for fans of the show only.

And I will not mess with the Zohan, ever.
