Kevin Smith Wins Appeal With MPAA

Remember that film we talked about yesterday, by that guy Kevin Smith? Well, his most recent movie “Zach and Miri Make a Porno” had recently received an NC-17 rating, much to the dismay of its star Seth Rogen. But Smith took up an appeal on the ruling, he came out victorious, and the movie will now be released as is with an R rating.
This is significant for Smith because with an NC-17 rating exhibition can be a problem and the film will never make any money, placing a giant stain on the directors bankability. Now all his fans, well if there are any left in the post-Apatow comedic world, will be free to rush out and catch this thing at the nearest multiplex on October 31st. We guess the score now stands MPPAA 499, directors 1.

Doesn’t our hypocrisy know no bounds . . . excessive violence, shown in study after study

oops … hit the wrong button. “Does our hypocrisy know no bounds? Excessive violence, shown in study after study to increase violent tendencies in certain individuals, gets lower ratings than a little slap and tickle. Oy.”

Yeah that’s interesting, Rick. I think I saw another study about ratings in different countries, or a lack thereof, especially in Europe.

Ratings in the good ol’ US of A have been successful only in the fact that they’ve avoided government censorship. Otherwise, they don’t work very well at all. Of course, it has something to do with our puritanical mind-set, which has been nourished by every administration from Abe Lincoln’s to George Bush’s.

Maybe Smith doesn’t have any fans left in this Apatow world (I certainly hope he doesn’t) but us Apatow lovers will go see anything with Seth Rogen in it. I think.

Well, I am no Smith fan or anything, but I am all for anyone going against the MPAA (even though it doesn’t really affect me, it’s the plight of directors like Smith that I admire), and I am interested in seeing “Zack and Miri” even if only because it has something do with a porno.
