“The Brothers Bloom” Shoved to Late ‘08 Release Date, Sad for Anyone Not Going to Toronto

“The Brothers Bloom,” Rian Johnson’s follow up to “Brick,” will now be released on the 19th of December in limited release and to open wide on the 16th of January 2009, instead of it’s original release date of the 24th of October (when “Synecdoche, New York” and “Changeling” are released). This news has been confirmed by the writer/director himself, as it totally understandable. [Cinematical]
He said, “There were a few reasons for the move: October and November are crowded as hell, it’s a tough tough market, especially for a smart unique film like ours, and we’d have a week or two at the most to sink or swim. Whereas concentrating on a couple markets for awards consideration in December, then pushing the wide in the more open January slot just seemed like a better use of resources.”
As long as the South African release date of the 6th February ’09 does not change as well. But, because that’s the way the cookie crumbles, it will. Hopefully, if I get my way and if my voice is heard by the organisers, “The Brothers Bloom” has a good chance of appearing at the Festival of Festivals in early November this year. Watch this space.

I guess I can wait until December. Frankly, there’s a lot of stuff coming in October I’m looking forward to already…more than there is for December, so this works.

But you did mention AFI Craig, so if you can see it there….for me though, unless I get it at my festival I have to wait quite a while and I do not want that.
I’m glad it works for you though, I just hope it somehow works in my favour too. I’m kinda selfish in that regard I guess, but I am so stoked for this

I’ll bet the SA release stays the same. There’s no reason it wouldn’t…right? Unless it bombs in the US or something. Apparently they’re looking to get some awards loving for extra international attention.
Even if comes to AFI, that’ll be at the end of November and not much sooner than the 12/19 limited date. Also, it might play as an overpriced “gala” that I won’t go to anyway.
Even if I have to wait until 12/19, I’m fine.

Nick – you have some say in what goes to the Festival of Festivals?! Coolest!
That was the coolest thing to happen to me last year (that’s an exaggeration I’m sure, but I can’t think of anything that seems cooler right now.)
Got to see Atonement, Jesse James & The Savages super super early & cld participate in the international online chatter. Coolest! & 3 of my favourite films of the year.
Missed Juno, Away from Her & La Vie en Rose though (I did have work to do in between). Fortunately the latter two didn’t take long to show, & I cldn’t make their slots @ the festival anyeay.
Juno, though, I could have seen but decided not to. Kicked myself when I finally saw it like 6 months later (9 months would have been so appropriate). But maybe its good I waited. I couldn’t possibly have enjoyed it more.
Anyway – can’t wait. & try for whatever its worth to get this showing! I loved loved loved Brick (the noirest film in ages, & not cause of super-styling, like the gorgeous but hollow Black Dahlia, but because of brilliant editing, plotting & dialogue. Perfectly captured the noir feel, but in mostly broad daylight & on high school grounds. brilliant. & the score was incredible.)
anyway, can’t wait. This cast is fantastic.

I have about 1% of a say, but it’s better than nothing….
It was THE COOLEST thing to happen to me, and was the sole reason I continued blogging. I caught everything except Away From Her (which I saw prior to the festival on DVD) and the screening of La Vie En Rose was cut short due to a power failure. Juno, The Darjeeling Limited, Jesse James and Atonement all ended up in my top ten list {I think}.
I really will try to get this screened, I cannot wait to see this.
p.s. I love it when you visit my blog, it makes me feel all warm inside, so thanks.

That’s great Nick, about the festival, that would mean you get to see some great festival fodder without waiting forever. I hope it all goes well, and if you get Brothers Bloom, I will be very happy for you.
