SJP’s “Butter” Gets Picked Up For Early ’09

Just the other day I was asking around town about Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Spinning into Butter.” Naturally, no one had heard much about whether or not it was going to be released and some hadn’t heard about it at all. A direct-to-DVD release became the most likely option as to how the general public would end up seeing the film. It appears now that Screen Media has picked up the drama for North American release in the first quarter of next year, in New York and Los Angeles and elsewhere after that. The film first hit troubled waters when financial problems left the cast and crew without pay, leaving ’Butter’ stranded with no way of getting back onto dry land, and everyone knows how well butter and water mix…

Fortunately, all is hunky dory now, and has been neatly wrapped up in a six-figure ribbon. The article by The Hollywood Reporter, in which they incorrectly state the film’s title as “Spinning Like Butter” unless I am the one who has it wrong, also brings up the fact that “Butter” will probably do better box-office wise after the success that was “Sex and the City,” which probably helped get Butter’s financial problems cleared up too. Now, where are all those people who thought “Sex and the City” was a waste of time? It’s done more good than harm.

“She’s in every frame of the film, but it shows her in a real and very different light,” said Robert Baruc who is the president of Screen Media. “The story forces viewers to truly examine their own opinions and feelings about race.” And to think we almost missed that.

I will be seeing the racially charged drama, also starring Mykelti Williamson, Beau Bridges and Miranda Richardson and directed by Mark Brokaw, this coming Monday at the Air France Film Festival, and will waste no time in running back and reporting whether it’s a nay or a yay. I am really hoping for the latter. Unless it preaches at me, because that I have no time for. Check out the trailer below, or download it if these ancient links still work: high quality/low quality.

Sounds interesting, look forward to your reportage Nick, I always trust your word and I will look out for this next year, as I missed it at the Montreal fest a few years back I think.

Thanks for the tip Nick, I’ll keep my eyes open for it, I love SJP.

I love her too! Which is why I have not forgotten about the film, you see, I saw the title on some dusty old Oscar watch list ages ago – like years even – and it has never left my memory. It’s an awesome title, it makes no sense to me right now, but it is memorable. So, yeah, when I saw it pop up on a festival schedule, I was glad. I’ve wanted to see it for some time. The power of visualisation I tell you…

Score! Another one we can see before it’s American release.

  5. Nick Plowman said,

That’s half my motivation to see it!

    What a horse face.

  7. Kerry said,

Now that’s just mean, sure she is unique looking, but to call her a horse face…shame.

I’m hoping this will be good. I like SJP a lot, but I almost think she was a better actress before Sex and the City (over the years, I found her portrayal of Carrie Bradshaw – which started out edgy and complex – getting lazier and more schtick-y). Her pre-Carrie Bradshaw film roles have been more interesting to me than anything she’s done since, but this one could be promising.

Nay on the horse face comment. Even if it’s true.

Hey Pat! So good to hear someone else besides me is expecting greatness from SJP in this film. I am too biased about SatC to comment on her performance in that, even though I do agree that she started off so, so well. Her filmic roles thus far are baffling. How she continues doing rom-coms is beyond me, she has so much talent and I think she should show that off, you know. She shows off everything else, in a good way. I’m crossing all my fingers, and all my toes.

Well, I know nothing about this so I will rely on you to provide the advance word. But it looks most interesting and the enthusiasm on this thread is intense.

Never heard of it. Wanna see it.

    “Air France Film Festival”

I hate you and love you at the same time.

  12. GoshWatcher said,

I love SJP too, so I am in.

  13. Sasha Perez said,

I’ve heard terrible things about this! Gosh.

  14. Nick Plowman said,

So have I, sort of, but I am blocking it out. I remain hopeful. Ha.

  15. GoshWatcher said,

Hm, you know, the bad things I had heard were all about the production setbacks and not bad things about the film itself.
