Depp Signs On For ‘Pirates’ 4, Ang Lee’s ‘Taking Woodstock’ To Blow Your Mind, & More

As if the third one didn’t seem like overkill, Disney has announced that there will be a fourth instalment of “Pirates of the Carribean” and even more shocking, Johnny ‘Caption Jack Sparrow’ Depp actually agreed to sign on yet again. At first, I was sure it was a joke, now I think its just plain stupid and thoughtlessly indulgent. [Variety]

Ang Lee’s writing/producing partner James Schamus spoke to MTV about Lee’s upcoming Woodstock film “Taking Woodstock,” and upped my expectations even though they were sky high to begin with. First, he notes that Demetri Martin is totally going to steal the show, which makes me happy, “This is his ‘Hello world, this is Demetri Martin [moment].” He goes further, “It’s not the concert, but there will be thousands and thousands of extras. It’s kind of like a zombie movie. One hippie shows up, and then another and then a thousand. It’s going to be fun.” Besides Martin, Paul Dano, Live Schreiber, Emile Hirsch and Imelda Staunton also star and fun is the least of my expectations. It’s going to be awesome. [MTV]

Just when I thought that Anne Hathaway was finally breaking away from the mould that has held back her vast talent, “Rachel Getting Married” seems like a great departure, it now appears that she has signed up for yet another female-minded literary adaptation, “The Opposite of Love.” In the film she is to play an attorney who is so obsessed with her career that she has trouble coping with her love life, so she turns down a marriage proposal and her life begins circling the drain. Another Andy Sachs, with fuglier clothes, anyone? [Variety]

Another budding starlet whose recent career choices have been questionable, but at least they are diverse, Rachel McAdams has signed on to play the lead in “Sherlock Holmes,” Guy Ritchie’s next movie that has already seen Robert Downey Jr. signed on to play the titular character and Jude Law to play Watson, his sidekick. As much as I didn’t want it to be so, this film is so a Fataculture must see now just based on the cast and nothing else. [The Playlist]

The latest, and final, trailer for Oliver Stone’s upcoming statire “W” surfaced yesterday, and I like it, and even though I would rather not have ever wanted to say this, I am completely stoked to see it now. It opens in the US on the 17th of October. [Yahoo]

Silent Light, Carlos Reygadas’ exhausting masterpiece, opens at the Museum of Modern Art for a six-day run, and absolutely everyone who can should see it as soon as possible. I loved it. Matt Lucas loved it, and there is no doubt in my mind that everyone else will too.

I still think the Pirates 4 thing is a joke. So is that news on Ms. Hathaway. Because, come on.

  2. Kerry said,

POTC 4 does not exist in my vocabulary, sorry.

More Silent Light plugging, I love it! I am so seeing it again.

  4. Nick Plowman said,

God Dave, isn’t it just great? I hope you have fun!

Taking Woodstock will RULE. I really, really love Demetri, and OMFG he must really be able to act too for Ang Lee to cast him so randomly like that. <3

Pirates. No. Even as someone who really like/love the franchise, NO.

Just wait until it’s headlined with “Academy Award-nominee Anne Hathaway.” I really wouldn’t care if she was in Shrek 17 if they used that. I’d be too blinded by pure love.

I gotz to see Silent Light. *sobs*

  6. I hope the rest of the world will think it’s a joke too and avoid it like the plague. My gut tells me it will do well though, not as good as the other three but still decent business. Didn’t everyone get enough of all the nonsense after the last two?

Anyway, thanks for the SILENT LIGHT plug. I pulled out my DVD copy yesterday and started watching it again…the opening and closing shots never fail to take my breath away.

Well Matthew, you deserved that plug, as you promoted that film before anyone else and wrote a truly great review for it.

Nick, in one sense I agree with Matthew on Depp and Sparrow, but on the other hand I know it will make a number of people happy. It’s like “you do your thing and I’ll do mine.” Nonetheless, I am always excited when a new Depp film is announced, even if this one is at the bottom of the ladder.

I am always excited for a new Depp film, but not in the form of a POTC flick. I liked the 3rd more than I should have, and I thought I said my goodbyes already. Enough is enough, we got Spiderman 4 & 5, Pirates 4, this is just all overindulgence and I dare say I don’t want a part of it.

  9. Actually Sam, Nick beat me to the punch on this one, and it was his excellent review that inspired me to seek it out in the first place.

I did, however, beat him to punch on PATTI SMITH. So we’ll call it even. ;-)

  10. Sam Juliano said,

Nick, how can I access your review on SILENT NIGHT?

  11. Dave said,

I still think your Silent Light review is the best you have ever written Nick, it should be published or framed or something.

  12. Sam Juliano said,

I just posted my view of your stunning review under the SILENT NIGHT thread. It is your best ever, methinks.

  13. Nick Plowman said,

Yes I noticed, thanks for the compliment Sam, it was a really easy review to right because the film was so great, so I owe it all to Reygadas ;)

  14. Vera said,

No no no no no no no no no. I refer, of course to POTC4, a crapfest in the making. Johnny, why? Other than the money must be nice.

  15. Nick Plowman said,

The saddest thing is that I will probably end up seeing it, and therefore help fund such projects as well. That makes me sad.
