‘Sherlock Holmes’ Pics, ‘Iron Man 2’: Cheadle In, Howard Out, And Other Life Changing Stuff

It didn’t take very long for the rumours of Guy Ritchie’s casting of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and his right-hand man Dr. Watson respectively turn into cold hard truths, and now we have the pics to prove it! Jude’s ‘stache is pretty interesting, as is RDJ’s haggard-ish looking face – who looks like Oliver Twist all grown up. Rachel McAdams is also set to star. Rumblings about accent issues be gone, Ritchie said, “My one concern was the accents but this is no longer the case. Robert Downey has the best English accent I’ve ever heard. Also Rachel McAdams is playing American (love interest Irene Adler), which is true to the books. Outside of that, Jude is obviously Brit. Robert was obviously going to be the big one, and we seem to have transcended that particular hurdle.”  [JustJared]

Terrance Howard, what the hell happened? Weren’t you super stoked to adorn the Iron Man suit and become War Machine somewhere down the line? To not be the faithful sidekick for once? To actually be a superhero in “Iron Man 2”? Because, now that Don Cheadle has stepped in to replace you, I am not that sure what to think. So you felt under compensated. And just like that, you were replaced. And just like that, the “Next time” you so coolly vocalised just isn’t going to happen. For you, anyway. Bummer. [THR]

After test screenings of the Seth Rogen-starring, Jody Hill-written + directed “Observe & Report,” no one is really sure what to think. According to CHUD, the darkly comic film (featuring Rogen in a role we haven’t seen him play before, a racist mall cop) left some audience members “feeling cold” with its politically incorrect humour. Some are saying it’s a bit like “Bad Santa,” which had its moments but I’d never see it again, but the thing is the film also stars Anna Faris, Ray Liotta, Collette Wolfe, Michael Pena and Jesse Plemons, so it is automatically a must-see for me. It’s about time Rogen stopped playing himself all the time, and if the film really is in trouble for being awesomely original and daring, that would be a great loss I think. Only time will tell. As long as its better than “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” seems to be. [CHUD]

“Lymelife,” which premiered in Toronto just the other month and stars Cynthia Nixon, Timothy Hutton, Jill Hennessey, Rory Culkin, Kieran Culkin, Emma Roberts and Alec Baldwin has been picked up for US distribution by Screen Media Films. No release date has been set just yet, but it sounds interesting enough for me to hope it does get one soon. [Variety]

Mel Gibson lets the world know he has limitations! He has said that under absolutely no circumstances would he make a “Lethal Weapon 5,” and that he regrets ever making 2, 3, and 4. Okay, he didn’t say the latter, but he was thinking it. And so is the rest of the world. Viva common sense, or learning from one’s mistakes, whatever, in plain and simple English – we will never have to think about ‘Lethal Weapon’ again. [LA. Times]

Having just got back from a screening of “Nick and Norah’s Infinte Playlist,” which I love to no end at this point in time with a review to pop up sometime this week, three things keeping replaying themselves over, and over in my mind; Kat Dennings and her completely endearing personality, the bright and alluring NYC lights and the free flowing, comforting soundtrack. Well, I fully intend to own the soundtrack as soon as possible, but if I get it from iTunes, apparently I get 4 bonus songs not featured on the physical CD: Michael Cera’s band in the film, The Jerkoff’s “Screw the Man,” Rogue Wave’s “Electro Socket Blues,” Marching Band’s “Trust Your Stomach” and Project Jenny, Project Jan’s “Negative.” Have a listen to them at The Playlist.

  1. OH MY LORD, Nicky…

    RDJ and JUDE JUDE JUDE…

It’s more than I can take.

    *faints*

So glad you love Nick and Norah, um, Nick, can’t wait to read that review!

Miranda….I know, RIGHT?! Ugh, it’s going to be so great to see them all onscreen together – McAdams included, let’s just hope Ritchie does it justice.

Yeah, I guess most people knew I would love “Nick & Norah,” and I did, more than I think most people did anyway. Definitely one of the best teen-focused romantic comedies (even if it is so much more than that) of late.

I think Howard is way better than Cheadle, and now that he is no longer attached to the film, I am pissed off. Seriously, like, I hate it when actors play a character in a film, and a completely different actor plays the same character in the sequel or whatever. Its like soap operas, where different actors play the same character over the show’s run, and its cheap and annoying. They should’ve tired to reach some sort of agreement with Howard, damn it.

Sherlock Holmes shall be awesome because of all the talent involved. I am sure of that.

  6. Guy Lodge said,

Eddie Marsan’s in “Sherlock Holmes” too — and he assured me that it’s not what you would expect from Guy Ritchie. So there’s hope yet!

I couldn’t bear “Nick and Norah,” I’m afraid — I thought it contrived and hopelessly twee, and I kept hoping the “playlist” of the title would be a running motif, a bit like “High Fidelity” for the teenage set, but to no avail. But then I am (groan) 25 — clearly too old and wizened.

  7. I’m not exactly sure why Ritchie was worried about RDJ’s English accent. Hasn’t he seen “Chaplin”? RDJ completely owned that accent (as with everything he did concerning that film).

  8. J.D. said,

Holmes will probably bomb if you just consider Ritchie’s presence. But I have hope for it. And the inevitable slash fiction.

    …I didn’t say that.

  9. Sam Juliano said,

Yep, J.D., Ritchie is the kiss of death, but the star chemistry is palpable. I didn’t see NICK AND NORA yet Nick, but look forward to your review.
