New ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Poster

Of course, it gives me thrills to hear Danny Boyle’s latest film “Slumdog Millionaire” is getting raves left, right and centre because he has been vastly underrated and underappreciated since forever. What doesn’t give me thrills is this poster, clearly going for an edgy, bright, energetic and kinetic concoction directly contrasting the colour palette of the films stills and publicity images used throughout the films festival hopping, and going for something similar to the colour scheme used in Wong Kar Wai’s “My Blueberry Nights” marketing. Nothing wrong with it for the most part, but I flat out hate the title’s font here. Its disgustingly old school.

Variety’s Anne Thompson, from whom I pinched the exclusive poster, states: “TV spots will take advantage of the movie’s Bollywood soundtrack and closing dance number, and eventually reviews and awards. Natch, Searchlight is supporting an Oscar campaign for the filmmaker—“it’s time,” says [Nancy] Utley—and adapted screenplay writer Simon Beaufoy, who was Oscar-nominated for the label’s The Full Monty. “We always have the little underdog,” says Utley, who’s banking that Slumdog will place favorably against darker, grimmer Oscar competition. “This movie makes you feel good in a time of deepening anxiety.”

According to Fox Searchlight’s Nancy Utley, their team do some of their best work under pressure. Then what went wrong here? Shrug. Nothing will stop me from seeing the film, of course, but I just wish the poster didn’t look so rushed. [via The Playlist]

I like it, but so do you, I assume, just the title that ticks you off. It is rather ugly.

Yeah, seriously, if you cut off that fugly title image thing and replace it with something different [read: better] this would be one of my favourite posters of the year, I love the colour palette (the ‘neony’ aspect of it, as my buddy JD would say) and the integration of the “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” question template is pretty clever. I doubt Searchlight has time to change it, but I wish they would.

Meh, I like it. Somewhat. Definitely different to the LMS/Juno marketing, but that’s a good thing.

If you look at the top part of that poster, and then the bottom section, its like two different ideas; and they clash. Not nice at all.

The poster is admittedly nothing special, but I’ll admit this film has among the strongest buzz of any late-season release. I look forward to it.

I hate it, it looks like they threw it together in about 5 minutes, like most of the posters to come out of this stinking season.

I don’t think its that bad, I like it. Its not the best thing ever, especially when compared to LMS smart poster with the bright yellow and the bus and all that, but its okay.

It is, and I love that part of it, I really do.

The fucking title thing just UGH, how could someone even THINK such ugly thoughts as to create such an awful title image.

It’s annoying, and cheap-looking, but I don’t mind it INCREDIBLY? Of course it could be better though. idk.

  12. glimmer said,

anyway i don’t know if therer were other slumdog posters. but when i’ve seen the slumdog logo/i’ve definitely seen imagery different from the one that has made this poster. so i thought those other image were sort of official.and were posters.
