Hollywood Riffs: ‘The Reader’ Called ‘Terrific!,’ Casting Gigs, ‘Che’ Team To Tackle ‘Falcone’
AwardsDaily has the first look at the poster for Kelly Reichardt’s “Wendy & Lucy,” starring the lovely Michelle Williams, and the poster is just as lovely. Definitely a film I will not miss under any circumstances, if and when I get to see it that is.
Even though most people have not seen “The Reader” yet, a friend of Anne Thompson’s has and calls it “terrific!” as well as saying it is “beautifully acted, especially by Kate Winslet. This is the third superb Ralph Fiennes supporting performance (yeah, he is now being pushed as supporting) I’ve seen this year (in addition to “In Bruges” and “The Duchess”), and newcomer David Kross is very fine in the lead.” Just to let you know, I have updated my Oscar predictions.
Charlize Theron is in talks to star alongside Tom Cruise in the remake of French thriller “Anthony Zimmer,” titled “The Tourist,” and she will play an Interpol agent who uses an American tourist in an attempt to lure a criminal she once had an affair with. The film will be directed by Bharat Nalluri (“Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”) and will begin production in March next year. [Variety]
Miramax have picked up “Last Night,” starring Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes for $ 4 million. The film, which I am so interested in, is about a married couple, played by Knightley and Sam Worthington, who part ways when Worthington’s character goes on a business trip with a desirable colleague played by Mendes, and while he is away, Knightley’s character meets up with a past lover played by Guillaume Canet.
Jenna Fischer will star in the indie dramedy “A Little Help,” directed by “King of Queens” creator Michael J. Weithorn, and she will play a widowed single mother who hooks up with an old lover, her sister’s husband, scandal! Meanwhile, Ginnifer Goodwin and Nicholas Hoult (Hugh Grant’s young co-star in “About A Boy,” yeah, him) are joining Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Matthew Goode in Tom Ford’s “A Single Man,” an adaptation of a 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood.
Peter Buchman and Steven Soderbergh, collaborators on the upcoming “Che,” are teaming up yet again with Paramount to bring a mob film titled “Making Jack Falcone” to life. Soderbergh will executive produce and Buchman will write the film which tells the story of Joaquin “Jack” Garcia, aka Jack Falcone, an undercover FBI agent who infiltrated the Gambino crime family. [THR]
The Playlist has the trailer for Joaquin Phoenix’s last film (yeah, right) “Two Lovers,” directed by James Gray that is set to open on the 13th of February next year, to coincide with Valentines Day (not really). They also have the new “Fanboys” trailer (yawn) and the new “Argentine” trailer (not so yawn). Watch the international “Two Lovers” trailer below.

Very nice poster indeed, I love it when Dargis, my favourite “official” critic, is quoted. Definitely a movie to keep your eye on.
I have high hopes for ‘The Reader,’ and I think it is high time I befriend Ms. Thompson as it seems that if you are friends with her, anything is possible. Can’t wait to see it myself.
Pretty much interested in just about everything you list here, especially the Falcone flick, a great book too, and The Tourist.

Saw ‘Che’ the other night, and dug it. Any Soderbergh project that comes up, I’m sold. Seeing ‘Wendy & Lucy’ too, from what I hear, it is amazing.

I try to avoid pulling for accolades for actors simply b/c I like them, but I like Michelle Williams so much that I hope she gets every good thing that comes to her.
p.s. She is just so cute!!!

I always have my doubts whenever anyone’s “friend” says this, or says that, but a little part of me, deep down, is elated by the fact that it may just be as good as hoped. That W&L poster is indeed lovely, using one of the same stills used all over the place for the films publicity, but its lovely nonetheless.
I, for one, am really looking forward to Two Lovers.
