Best Animated Feature Shortlist

Posted in Academy Awards 08, Film Awards tagged , , , at 1:36 pm by Nick Plowman

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have unveiled the fourteen animated films in the running for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars next year, listed below in alphabetical order. Only three of these films will make the cut in terms of nominations, as no fewer than eight films but fewer than sixteen films need to be in the “eligible” field. In my mind, “WALL-E” owns this award, nothing will even come close, but right now I am thinking that “Kung Fu Panda” and “Waltz with Bashir,” despite its darker subject matter, will round off the nominees (others agree with me), assuming “Bashir” gets its LA Oscar qualifying run in time. If not, perhaps “The Tale of Despereaux” will take its place. Having only seen a few of these, I’m just saying.

• Bolt
• Delgo
• Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!
• Dragon Hunters
• Fly Me to the Moon
• Igor
• Kung Fu Panda
• Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
• $9.99
• The Sky Crawlers
• Sword of the Stranger
• The Tale of Despereaux
• WALL-E
• Waltz with Bashir

Yeah, Wall*E is taking it. Panda will get a nom, but I am not so sure about Bashir, just because Persepolis did it doesn’t mean lightning strikes twice, but you never know, it has received good reviews, and I did like it a lot.

Who cares who is nominated if WALL-E has pretty much won it already? Its so pointless.

Yeah, I’m shaky on Bashir. If it’s nominated, it’d easily be the darkest foreign/art house nominee in the history of the category, right? It might be a tough sell to the branch, who could easily go with something lighter instead (Desperaux, Horton maybe?).

That said, WALL•E can’t not lose it. And KFP can’t not place #2.

Well Jerry, although we all do know WALL-E will win in the end (as well it should too,, as it’s one of the ten best films of 2008 for certain) the only real surprise left is what the other four noms will be. We know KUNG FU PANDA and WALTZ WITH BASHIR are in, so what the remaining two are is the only open question, methinks.

    please not pixar.thank you god…

  6. WALL-E FOREVER!!!!

  7. Sam, under Academy rules only 3 films can be nominated if there are less than 16 eligible films. Looks like WALL-E, KUNG FU PANDA, and WALTZ WITH BASHIR are the only frontrunners right now.

Yeah, I actually agree with Jerry, Wall-E has it in the bag. but I would like to see Panda and Bashir getting nominated, I loved those both too.

Isn’t Fly Me to the Moon considered like one of the worst movies of the year, animated or not? Maybe I’m thinking of something else.

    Thanks glim =)

And yeah Dan, apparently Fly Me to the Moon sucked majorly, so I’m not too sure what its doing there, but whatever. Guess they had to make it out like they hadn’t already engraved the Oscar with “WALL-E,” make it seem more inconspicuous.

Wall.e should win. Kung Fu Panda could the dark horse here. I loved both movies.

  12. Nick Plowman said,

Yup, so did I. Panda more than I thought I would.

Sword of the stranger deserves a nomination along with Wall-E and Waltz with Bashir (which i haven’t seen but is apparently very good). mind you Bashir doubles as a documentary and it may just show up there instead.
i think what would be really nice is a showcase of different animation styles. so Wall-E for 3d graphics, sword for 2d animation and 9.99 for claymation. apparently $9.99 is quite good too.

and look Panda was pretty to look at but storywise, kinda dull. That said they’ll nominate it because it has a better boxoffice/marketing campaign. so unfortunatley against my better judgement.
    Wall-E
    Kung-Fu Panda
    Bolt
i dunno why the nominations always have to be for kids films.
and yah, Wall-E will take it no question, kinda boring since we’ve been well aware of the films greatness for a long time now. but apparently we need to give it a gold statue to make it official, because we wouldn’t know it was good without it right?
