mettre à jour

Posted in Film tagged at 1:33 pm by Nick Plowman

A mettre à jour/update/opdatere/uppdatera/aggiornare on this here blog is way overdue. As you probably don’t know, there is exactly one week left (in which I have to write no less than three tests) of the first term (of four) of my final year of high school, then I go on a three or so week break. And, let me tell you, a break is exactly what I need. On the upside, I’m doing better in school than I have in the last four years, and my lowest mark is that of a B-. With great sacrifice, comes great reward I suppose. Let’s see if I can keep it up, shall we?

Sure, the fact that I cant really tell you the last time I saw a movie stings, but whatever. Okay, that’s a lie, the last movie I saw was “Confessions of a Shopaholic” and its my favourite fluff of ‘09 thus far and Isla Fisher is a comic goddess of note. Which ever idiot (and I know there were many) said that the film couldn’t have come out at a worse time, due to the recession thing, clearly had no idea what the film was even about, coz there’s plenty a message about the importance of saving, assessing one’s needs and wants and the promotion of consumer sensibility – and above all, tons of laughs.

I guess there’s a message in there for all idiots too – don’t knock it until you see it. Speaking of seeing, I hear “Sita Sings The Blues” is playing in the US in some capacity – on demand, I think and its also up for download – courtesy of the filmmaker (Nina Paley) herself, so check it out, its good. Will review it soon.

Another thing you probably don’t know is my new writing gig at In Review Online (InRO), which is a pretty spiffy looking site that features weekly film and music reviews by a culmination of some of the finest young writers I’ve read in a while – including Matt Lucas, and of course myself. But I’m not that vain, lol, I’m just the new kid on the block there and you really ought to do yourself a favour and get your butt over there and check it out. While you’re at it, check out my review of “Three Monkeys” there, seeing as I’ve been way to busy/lazy to post its Fataculture equivalent here.

Also, a particular someone who shan’t be named has been force-feeding me (upon my request) some of the finest music you’re likely to hear all year, including the new Animal Collective (best track – “My Girls” look to the top righthand corner of that page for the song download), Phoenix (best track – “1901”), Grizzly Bear, The Thermals, Neko Case (best track – “Peope Got A Lotta Nerve“), Antony and the Johnsons and Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums and plenty, plenty more (check out InRO’s 30 most anticipated albums for the remainder of ‘09 for hints). You can now officially stalk the music I’m listening to on Last.fm – too bad I cant post the widget on the blog, sometimes I wonder why this free WordPress has to suck so bad. If you are on Last.fm too, befriend me, I’d like to stalk you too. New favourite blog alert: Pop Apocalypse. Regarding musically-inclined things – should I watch Oasis and Snow Patrol perform live in SA during my Autumn break? Coz I can’t make up my mind if its worth it – at around $80 for golden circle tickets, and I would have to suffer through performances of ear-bleeding-causing heavy metal acts. Tell me what I ought to do.

Someone sent me an email yesterday regarding the trailer for “Within The Whirlwind,” starring the ever amazing Emily Watson, which I’ve never heard of. He went on to say, and forgive me for quoting Person Who Sent Me The Email, “In it, she [Watson] exhibits practically every human emotion. She’s really bringing it. Film looks very interesting. The so called prediction sites are sleeping on this performance bigtime. I usually don’t get swayed by trailers, but I have to admit I was with this one. Good to see her back carrying a film again. Plus, Oscar is no stranger to her, and they like period piece true stories of overcoming horrible conditions that end up with a happy ending.”

I couldn’t agree more. You can watch it below, in the usual shite YouTube quality coz I couldn’t find it anywhere else.

Until next time I pluck up the courage to log into my WordPress account, which will probably be in one week’s time, stay awesome people. And it kills me to say this, RIP Natasha Richardson, you were so amazing. In fact, you still are. Always will be.

Oh god, and before I forget, happy belated sweet sixteen to JD of Valley Dreamin’ and happy bday to Rod at The Playlist, both of whom I hope had fanfreakintastic bdays.

You know you love me,

xoxo

  1. I told you this before, but I’m so happy for you that you brought your average up so far in such a short amount of time. All your readers totally miss you, but we know you’re off doing something totally valuable with your time.

Critics are totally stupid for completely missing the point of “Confessions of a Shopaholic.” Becky may have started off as a consumer-whore but, by the end, she grows into another person and atones for her shopping sins. This is totally something everyone can relate to, especially during this recession. More people should see it, actually.

Well, if you’re the Gossip Girl now, than I have to be Blair.

  2. Bout time you updated this thing, it was starting to collect dust! ;-)

Glad to hear you’re doing well in school, Nicky. Not too much longer before my summer break either. Hope you enjoy your vacation, you deserve it!

The ‘Within the Whirlwind’ trailer does look excellent, and I most assuredly have an interest to see it! I actually haven’t seen ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ but I finally saw a late show of TWO LOVERS last night and I really did like that film (OK the afternoon screenings of DUPLICITY and KNOWING were nothing to write home about–and thats an understatement!)

I will definitely read your review of THREE MONKEYS pronto.

The best news of all is that you have focused on your studies, which is a million times more important than blogging, which is at best a n enriching hobby. Sure you are missed, but you know that, and you’re doing the right thing. Finish up your school year with a bang.

  4. “You know you love me.”

And we do, baby boy. We genuinely DO.

Congrats on the new writing gig (WELL DONE!!!) and the fabulous grades.

    I’m so happy.

You’re gonna be a star one day. Just you wait and see.

I was going to say that I’ll be able to remark that I knew you when. But I’ll still be in touch with you. So, instead, I’ll be able to state how proud I am of you whenever it happens.

This is only 355 shades of intense awesomeness.

    Wonderful news…

Nice! – I’m seeing Sita Sings the Blues on Saturday.

And welcome back and congrats on IRO and school – keep up the good work, here and everywhere else!

Awesome, thanks for the update. I didn’t think I’d enjoy Confessions of a Shopaholic. I read the book, weirdly enough, way back, and I thought that was it, but maybe I’ll check it out on DVD.

Thanks for the tip on Sita Sings the Blues. I’ll definitely check it out.

Interesting Emily Watson/Marleen Gorris preview. Have you seen the Luzhin Defense, as it was a movie I enjoyed when it came out is another Emily/Marleen collaboration.

BTW I added you at Last.Fm too (I’m allya1). & thanks for the Natasha Richardson shout out. It was shocking what happened. :’(

  8. I’m also really digging the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. So many good songs on there. I’ll have to add you on last.fm…
