Trailer: ‘Taking Woodstock’

I don’t know how many of you have seen the Academy Award Winning 1970 documentary “Woodstock,” but it may just be one of my favourite documentaries/rock concert films of all time. Something about Woodstock seems to fascinate me to no end, in fact, the entirety of the hippie-era culture seems to. Ang Lee is a director whose work, time and time again, ends up as being shortlisted for my favourite film of their given years.

Emile Hirsch is an actor who I’d watch read the phonebook, and enjoy it. If you take that, add a cast consisting of Demetri Martin, Imelda Staunton, Henry Goodman, Jonathan Groff, Mamie Gummer, Eugene Levy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Liev Schreiber (in drag!) and a score by Danny Elfman, “Taking Woodstock” is a film I am anticipating almost more than any other this year (and it opens in the US on August 14th).

This trailer, however, certainly wasn’t what I was expecting. I’m guessing it was tailor cut for the purpose of appealing to the viewers of “Important Things with Demetri Martin” and the theatrical trailer will be a slightly different beast altogether. That’s what I am hoping for. I’m also hoping for a more sophisticated but comic and definitely not campy film. It still looks like it could be good/fun/a good enough time though. A change of pace for Lee, for certain. That’s just my opinion, what’s yours?

  1. Simply judging by the trailer, I say it’s one of the best films of the year or easily one of the worst of the decade.

    No in between, Nicky.

But unless it’s awful, I’m likely going anyway.

Woodstock lives! Online radio channels RADIO WOODSTOCK which features music from the original Woodstock era to today and RADIO WOODSTOCK 69 with exclusively music from the original Woodstock era are both available at: http://www.radiowoodstock.com. We’re based at Utopia Studios in Woodstock. It’s Woodstock to the world. Peace, love, music.

  3. I’ve read the script and I’m confident this film is going to be really good. Then again, I tend to be bias since I have an obsession with the 60s.

  4. The cast is amazing and I love Ang Lee. Even if people tell me it’s terrible, I’ll have to watch it.

  5. I’ve been waiting for this!! I didn’t know there was already a trailer. Thanks for the heads-up!

Yeah, even if it’s awful: I’m still going to see it, but this trailer is pretty bad. Okay, like totally bad.

I second that, Sam. We’re coming up on a month dry here! Not to put any pressure at all on Nick, I’m sure he’s enjoying a well-deserved break, and truth be told this is by far the best time of year to avoid movies. Hope you’re back refreshed and soon, Nick.

Indeed Daniel. But I know Nick is busy with his studies, and he’s assessing how he wants to proceed.

The bottom line of course is that he’s a terrific kid, and we all miss him very much. I trust Nick to do whatever will help him on with his intended career. His time is precious.

The first time I saw the trailer, I was shocked that they tagged on “a film by Ang Lee” at the end. However, it seemed like it could be fun. Seeing the preview a second time was a bit much.

I’m wondering if Ang Lee is losing it. But still I’m looking forward to seeing the Janis Joplin character. It should be interesting at least.

Hi! I was looking your About & Contact, and I saw that you are an expert in films, but, also, I saw that your all time best film is Thirteen. !!!. I didn’t like it so much, but the most important thing that I want to say is that the main idea was stolen from another movie, called Mauvaises fréquentations, a french film of 1999,, you must watch it!

have a good one,, I hope to read you soon…

Looks really great. Ang Lee is a strange animal though and has had missteps, so we’ll see how things turn out.
